SCHRITT 3: Was habe ich gelernt?
STEP 3: What have I learnt?
1. Why the first contact with students is important?
Explanation: to ensure that the refugee student understands the aims, content, organisation and requirements of the educational and training programme well enough to make a qualified choice of education, to be sure that the educational course matches expectations, interests and capabilities of the student and to create mutual trust and engagement between the newcomer and the educational institution.
2. In which period of the school year the first encounter has to be organized?
Explanation: The introduction is organised before the refugee student starts his training programme and it has to be carried out by a designated person
3. How the first encounter can be organized?
Explanation: It can be an individual interview, a guided tour of the school facilities, a trial lesson or an “open school day”.
4. How VET providers can focus on refugees’ former experiences?
Explanation: VET providers have to consider that refugees have experienced different situations: they come from different countries with diverse school systems, methods and competence acquisition processes; they probably had no-school training, or they had an informal school formation; despite they are no-schooling, they maybe have characterizing and largely practical work experiences.
5. Why future expectations of the students must be considered during the first encounter?
Explanation: They are important in oder to choose an adequate school path. Personal expectations sphere is crucial because if plans for the future are linked to a related training and educational process, refugee student can achieve his goal in a better and more proficient way. Furthermore, self-realization is linked to self-perception and personal well-being: only if training acquisition matches refugee expectation and aspirations, there will be full integration in the labour market and in the wider society.
