- No, other: _________________
Explanation
IF THE RESPONSE IS "YES”: It is very positive that you can arrange support for your refugee learners if needed. Some refugees struggle with personal and psychosocial problems due to their past or present situation. The reason for non-completion of an education or training is often related to problems outside of the training/ school or workplace. Therefore e.g. a network of contact persons can be helpful, or additionally a multi-professional support system could be accessible if needed. It is essential for the different parties involved – be it schools, companies, social workers or relatives – to collaborate and to coordinate with each other. Topics that can be necessary to tend to include psycho-social, linguistic and legal issues, mental problems, problems in terms of housing and finances. A holistic and successful approach can include e.g. admission support, so that refugees get access to the VET measure in the first place.
IF THE RESPONSE IS “No, the learners don’t need any”: As with every group of vulnerable students, the reason for non-completion of VET is often related to problems outside of the training or workplace. Although not every refugee learner needs external support, it may not always be visible at first sight, what the reasons for dropouts or failure are. An evaluation of the reasons of failure and personal conversations with the learners might help to get clarity and find out about needs. Topics that can be necessary to tend to include psycho-social, linguistic and legal issues, mental problems, problems in terms of housing and finances. A holistic and successful approach can include e.g. admission support, so that refugees get access to the VET measure in the first place.
ONE OF THE OTHER “NO” RESPONSES: If external support cannot be arranged for refugee learners, problems outside of the educational context can have a negative impact on the completion of VET for some learners. If you find it hard to supply or organize this support, try to coordinate with local NGOs/NPOs or social institutions. They will know the social landscape and have detailed knowledge about the offers in your area. Many supporting measures do already exist and it is not necessary to “reinvent the wheel”, the often very small projects just have to be known. Also families/ friends, volunteers or caretakers can be an important source of support.
